Thousands of acres of forest land set aside for university in occupied Trikomo

Approval of major land deal for a new campus sparks strong reactions over environment, process, and what it means for the area’s future.

The “parliament” in the Turkish-occupied north has approved a controversial amendment allowing the “transfer and lease” of around 3,500 dönums of forest land to Istanbul Technical University (ITU), with plans to build a new university campus in Trikomo.

The measure passed with 26 votes in favor and 14 against, after it had previously been referred back for review by Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman. It was also approved earlier by the relevant “committee” with a majority vote.

Authorities backing the plan argue that the investment by ITU will boost development in the area and create new opportunities for young people. The final version of the text includes a clause stating that the land must be used exclusively for educational purposes.

However, opposition parties have raised concerns over gaps and unclear provisions in the plan, warning about the potential environmental impact and the broader consequences of developing forest land in the area. Questions have also been raised about how the land will be managed and the approval process behind the decision.

The issue is part of a long-running debate over the use of forest and public land in Trikomo. Environmental groups have strongly opposed the move, warning it could lead to the degradation of forest areas, while supporters describe the project as a step toward regional development and investment in education.
