Severe weather swept across parts of Cyprus around midday Friday, bringing hail, strong winds and, in one area, a tornado.
A video shared by the weather website KitasWeather captured the moment a tornado touched down in the village of Kalo Chorio in the Larnaca district.
Weather update
A weak low-pressure system is currently affecting the region, contributing to unstable weather conditions.
In the afternoon, increased cloud cover is expected in some areas, potentially leading to isolated showers or thunderstorms, especially in mountainous regions, the interior and the east. Winds will be predominantly from the southwest to northwest, blowing at moderate to strong speeds, locally reaching very strong levels at 5 to 6 on the Beaufort scale. Seas will be slightly to moderately rough.
Overnight, skies will remain mostly clear, though some areas may experience periods of low cloud cover. Winds will shift slightly but remain from the southwest to northwest, light to moderate at 3 to 4 Beaufort, with some areas experiencing stronger gusts early in the evening. The sea will remain moderately rough, becoming slightly rough by morning. Temperatures will fall to 15°C inland, around 18°C along the coasts, and 10°C in the mountains.
Outlook
On Saturday, partly cloudy skies are expected, with isolated showers or thunderstorms likely throughout the day.
Sunday and Monday will be mostly clear, although local cloud development during midday and early afternoon could bring isolated showers or thunderstorms, mainly in mountainous areas.
Temperatures are not expected to change significantly over the three-day period, remaining slightly below seasonal averages.
