Isolated showers, strong winds, and a selective day off

Some get a holiday, others get homework, and everyone gets a breeze to the face.

Today is the Ascension, a significant date in the Christian calendar, marking 40 days after Easter. In Cyprus, it doubles as one of those curious days when the island seems to agree to disagree. Some schools are closed, others are deep in final exams, and quite a few people are retired and blissfully unaware of whether it's a holiday or not. In short: it's a day off for some, business as usual for others, and a solid excuse to check the weather before making any big plans.

As for that weather? Expect a little bit of everything.

The day will start off mostly clear, but as the afternoon rolls in, clouds are expected to build, especially over the mountains, inland regions, and the eastern part of the island. These clouds may bring isolated showers or even a sneaky thunderstorm, the kind that appears out of nowhere and leaves you wondering why you didn't pack an umbrella.

Winds will be southwesterly to northwesterly, starting off light to moderate at around 3 to 4 Beaufort. But don’t get too comfortable. By the afternoon, they’ll strengthen to 4 to 5 Beaufort and may even reach a punchy 6 Beaufort along the southern coast. That’s strong enough to send your sunhat flying and make your beach umbrella question its purpose in life. The sea will be slightly to moderately rough, which means swimmers and sailors alike should take note.

Temperatures will climb to 32°C inland, perfect for anyone wishing it were already August. Along the western coast, it’ll be a milder 26°C, and around 28°C on the rest of the coast. If you’re heading up to the mountains, expect a cooler 23°C; refreshing, but potentially interrupted by a passing shower.

Tonight, skies remain mostly clear, though early risers may spot some low clouds or patchy fog drifting by at dawn. Winds will stay in the same southwesterly to northwesterly direction, light to moderate, while the sea will remain a bit unsettled, especially in the west. Overnight temperatures will drop to 15°C inland, about 17°C along the coast, and a brisk 10°C in the higher mountains, a gentle reminder that we haven’t completely shaken off spring just yet.

Looking ahead, Friday and Saturday are shaping up to be partly cloudy with a chance of afternoon showers or thunderstorms, especially over the mountains, inland areas, and possibly the southwest. By Sunday, things clear up a bit, but even then, the afternoon may surprise us again with a few more clouds and the possibility of a brief downpour or thunderclap in higher terrain.

Temperatures will dip slightly on Friday and hover just below average over the weekend, still warm enough to enjoy, but not quite peak summer levels.

So whether you're enjoying a day off, stuck in an exam hall, or simply watching the weather from your balcony, keep your sunglasses handy and maybe a rain jacket too. Just in case.
