Torrential rain hammered parts of Cyprus on Friday afternoon, turning streets into rivers and creating flash floods that caused traffic chaos and panic in several areas.
The downpour hit with little warning, especially in Limassol, where water poured down hillsides, carrying debris into town and overwhelming the drainage system. Videos circulating online show cars struggling to move through flooded roads, while pedestrians sought shelter under awnings and bus stops as sheets of rain pounded the pavement.
Several neighborhoods reported water seeping into shops and ground-floor homes, while rescue crews were dispatched to assist motorists stuck in rising water.
The Cyprus Fire Service confirmed receiving dozens of calls for assistance across the island, mostly related to flooded premises and stranded vehicles.
This sudden change in weather comes after several days of mild spring conditions and caught many people off guard. Flash floods are always a risk in Cyprus when heavy rain falls in a short period, especially in urban areas where the ground can’t absorb water quickly enough.
Meteorologists say this was a highly localized weather event caused by unstable atmospheric conditions, and more detailed forecasts are expected soon.
Tonight: Mostly clear skies with some cloud flirtation in the west and north—possible drizzle. Inland and eastern areas might wake up to fog or mist.
Weekend sneak peek:
- Saturday: Starts sweet, ends with scattered storms (again).
- Sunday: Cloudy with occasional showers.
- Monday: Clearer skies and warmer temps on the horizon.
Stay safe, stay dry, and if the skies open up, consider it nature’s drumroll for a day of paws and purpose.
