Total of 126 asylum seekers in Cyprus sent to Germany

A total of 126 applicants for international protection, originating from Somalia, Afghanistan, Congo, Nigeria and Syria departed on Tuesday on the first chartered flight from Cyprus to Germany where they are being resettled.

The total number of resettled persons is now 346, including the applicants for international protection sent to Germany.

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Interior this is one of a series of transportations expected to take place during the next months, in the framework of the voluntary solidarity mechanism of the EU. The special chartered flight left at 0800.

The transportation of the 126 applicants for international protection took place in cooperation with the Interior Ministry Asylum Service, the EU Asylum Agency, the International Organization for Migration and the German authorities.

The resettling process began three months ago in other EU member states as well, as France, Bulgaria and Romania.
