A 29-year-old tourist is in the intensive care unit after he was struck by a car while trying to cross the road in Ayia Napa.
According to local media, a Swedish man was attempting to cross Xylofagou Street in Ayia Napa on Thursday morning, around 3:40am, when he was struck by an oncoming vehicle driven by a 38-year-old male.
Sources told Knews the Swedish man was on holiday with his wife in Cyprus, while the driver was described as a foreign national who is a permanent resident on the island
The tourist was rushed to the Emergency Room at Famagusta General Hospital where doctors on duty said his condition was extremely critical.
Initial reports said the victim had sustained head injuries that caused internal bleeding. Later his condition was updated, said to be critical but stable.
Additional reports failed to indicate whether or not the tourist remained unconscious.
Police said the driver was administered a Brethaslyzer test with zero indication of alcohol consumption. No arrest was reported following the incident.
