An elderly woman was killed in an accident on Thursday when she was struck by a car on the Kornos-Kofinou old highway, in Larnaca district.

According to police, 68-year-old Athena Louka from Limassol was fatally injured on Thursday night, around 9:40pm, when she was struck by an oncoming vehicle under circumstances pending investigation.

Media reports said Louka landed on the car’s front bumper after initial impact and then fell to the ground. The pedestrian was rushed to the Emergency Room at Larnaca General Hospital, where doctors on duty pronounced her dead on arrival.

Police said the car was driven by a local 49-year-old female, also from Limassol, while it was not specified whether Louka was attempting to cross the street or walking along the side of the road.

Reports also said the driver made a U-turn and returned to the scene to see what had happened, while police said officers administered a Breathalyzer test on her with an alcohol indication twice the limit.

The driver was detained but her arrest charges were unclear. The car was also impounded for further tests.

Larnaca police are investigating the incident.
