Tuesday, December 30th forecast: The penultimate countdown

Washing away 2025 as clouds gather today before a stormy send-off tonight.

Newsroom

Welcome to the very last Tuesday of the year. We have officially reached the "penultimate" day of 2025, a fancy word that essentially means we are almost at the finish line, but the weather has decided to make the final stretch a bit slippery. A weak low-pressure system is moving in, apparently determined to wash the year away rather than let it fade out quietly.

Today starts with a bit of a mood shift. The skies will gradually turn mainly cloudy, acting as a grey curtain closing on the year. By the afternoon, if you are in the west (Paphos side), expect the first drops of isolated showers. The winds will be shuffling around from the southwest, keeping things breezy but manageable. The real shock to the system, however, is the temperature. We are looking at a chilly 15°C inland, 17°C on the coast, and a "bring a scarf" 6°C in the mountains.

Tonight is when the weather really gets into the party spirit, but the chaotic "lampshade on the head" kind. The clouds will thicken, bringing local rain and isolated thunderstorms that will start in the west and gradually spread across the island. It’s going to be a noisy night with thunder, potential hail, and for those on the highest peaks of Troodos, snow or sleet. The winds will pick up, especially on windward coasts (reaching a strong 5 Beaufort), and the sea will get rough.

Three-day outlook: The timing is... interesting. Tomorrow (New Year's Eve) looks set to be a wet one, with clouds, rain, and thunderstorms continuing throughout the day. Troodos will likely see more snow. However, by Thursday (New Year's Day), the worst should be over, leaving us with partly cloudy skies and just a few showers in the west. Friday looks crisp and mainly clear, though a bit colder.

So, if you have outdoor plans for tonight or tomorrow's countdown, you might want to move them under a sturdy roof. 2025 is going out with a splash!
