If you thought Monday’s dramatic atmospheric shake-up was a one-time event, the Cyprus sky has some news for you. That rare cocktail of seasonal low pressure and stubborn atmospheric instability is still firmly in charge. We are looking at a classic summer-winter hybrid day: plenty of bright sunshine to start, followed by a sudden rush for cover by midday.
We start the morning by burning away the early low clouds and coastal mist, paving the way for what looks like a beautiful summer day. Don't let it fool you.
Inland areas: Temperatures will peak at a very standard 37°C. However, right around lunchtime, the clouds will bubble up again, triggering localized showers and isolated cracks of thunder across the interior.
The mountains: Troodos stays wonderfully cool at 26°C, but it is right in the bullseye for the heaviest afternoon thunderstorms. If you’re heading up the peaks, pack a raincoat alongside your hiking boots.
The coastlines: The beaches are your safest bet today, averaging a comfortable 32°C. While you might see some towering dark clouds inland, the coast should stay mostly dry, save for a few passing low clouds.
Winds start gentle out of the southwest to northwest at 3 to 4 Beaufort. By the afternoon, though, the coastlines will get a bit lively as the breeze stiffens to a firm 4 to 5 Beaufort. The sea will transition from dead calm to a light, playful chop later in the day.
Tonight, once the sun goes down, the storm clouds will dissolve, leaving us with a mostly quiet night, albeit a slightly humid one. Periods of low cloud cover will drift across the island, and if you are driving late tonight or early Wednesday morning, watch out for patchy fog and thick mist rolling over the inland plains and eastern districts. The wind will dial right back down to a faint 3 Beaufort, shifting to a northerly/easterly flow, while the north coast sees a light southeasterly breeze. The sea goes back to being as flat as a pancake.
The outlook
If you're waiting for the weather to return to its usual bone-dry July settings, you'll need to be patient.
Wednesday & Thursday: Expect a near carbon-copy of today. Sunny mornings will give way to cloudy, unstable afternoons, bringing scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms to the mountains and inland communities.
Friday: The instability finally starts to lose its punch. The thunderstorms should fade, but the mountains will still see a few isolated afternoon showers to close out the workweek.
Through it all, temperatures won't budge much, staying right on the nose of our usual seasonal averages. Keep the umbrella in the car; you're going to need it.
