The Turkish Academy has granted observer status to the so-called turkish republic of northern cyprus (trnc), according to Turkish media reports, marking what they describe as “yet another new status” for the breakaway entity.
The decision was reportedly approved during an informal summit of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) held in Budapest.
The trnc, recognized only by Turkey, is now listed as an observer at the Turkish Academy, a regional coordination center for Turkic studies. The Academy operates under the OTS and facilitates scientific and educational cooperation among Turkic-speaking nations and communities.
According to the reports, the Academy’s work spans multiple disciplines, including history, archaeology, ethnology, anthropology, literature, linguistics, terminology, art, and socio-economic studies.
Turkey, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan are founding members of the Academy. Uzbekistan and Hungary currently hold observer status. The institution is based in Astana, Kazakhstan.
Turkish media also noted that a Host Country Agreement was signed between the Academy and Kazakhstan on Nov. 16, 2020. The parliaments of Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Turkey ratified the agreement establishing the Academy in 2021.
The Turkish Academy has operated as a fully-fledged international organization since 2022. It is funded by contributions from member states and staffed by international personnel. The organization is headed by Professor Dr. Shahin Mustafayev.
