Police arrested Cenk Tosunoglu, 30, a Turkish Cypriot and son of “independent MP” Hasan Tosunoglu, Thursday at the Agios Dometios checkpoint in connection with an ongoing child pornography investigation.
Authorities said the arrest, executed at 11:40 a.m. as Tosunoglu attempted to cross into government-controlled areas, followed information received from Europol. He remains in custody and is expected to appear in court Friday for a detention order.
His father, Hasan Tosunoglu, suggested the arrest may have political motives, linking it to his support for a two-state resolution in the occupied north. He said the family has been unable to contact Cenk and described the charges as unclear.
“Some kind of psychological harassment” is at play, the father claimed, calling for the situation to be rectified promptly. Officials from the occupied areas confirmed the case is under investigation.
