The report on the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) was released as an official document of the UN Security Council.

The Secretary-General requested the extension of the mandate of the mission for another six months until January 31st, 2023.

"In light of the continued contribution of UNFICYP to peace and stability and to the creation of conditions conducive to a political settlement, I recommend that the Security Council extend the mandate of the mission for six months, until 31 January 2023”, he says at the report which is expected to be voted the next days.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied 37% of its territory. Numerous rounds of talks under the UN aegis to reunite the island under a federal roof failed to yield results.
