The University of Cyprus is opening its doors to more international students and giving local students more options to study in English after receiving government approval for four new English-language undergraduate degree programs.
The Council of Ministers gave the green light on Thursday for the new courses, marking another step in the university's drive to strengthen its international profile and attract students from around the world.
The new bachelor's programs, expected to begin in September 2027, are
- Medicine (MD)
- Business Administration (Accounting or Finance)
- Business Administration (Marketing, Operations Management or Management)
- Economics, with specializations in Economic Theory and Econometrics or International and European Economic Studies
University of Cyprus Rector Tasos Christofides welcomed the decision, describing it as an important milestone for the institution.
He said preparations are already underway to ensure the new programs are ready for students when they launch in 2027.
The announcement comes as the university prepares to introduce its first-ever English-language undergraduate program next month. The degree in Urban Sustainability is set to welcome its first students in September 2026, paving the way for a broader range of English-taught courses.
For many students, the move means they may no longer have to leave Cyprus to pursue an English-language degree in subjects such as medicine, business, or economics. It could also make the University of Cyprus more attractive to international applicants, helping position the island as a growing destination for higher education in the region.
As universities across Europe compete for global talent, the expansion of English-language programs reflects a wider shift towards international education, one that could benefit both Cyprus' academic sector and the country's economy in the years ahead.
