Verdict day in Cyprus’ 'golden passport' scandal

Former House Speaker and ex-MP face judgment over alleged abuse of power in fast-tracked citizenship program.

Newsroom

The moment of truth has arrived in one of the most explosive corruption cases in recent memory, as the Nicosia Permanent Criminal Court is set to deliver its verdict Tuesday morning for former House Speaker Dimitris Syllouris and ex-MP and businessman Christakis Tziovanis.

The case, rooted in the fallout from undercover reporting by Al Jazeera, has gripped public attention for years, shining a harsh spotlight on Cyprus’ controversial citizenship-by-investment scheme and the political influence surrounding it.

Prosecutors allege the two men abused their positions of power to help foreign investors secure fast-tracked or exceptional citizenship approvals. They argue the defendants leveraged their political status to push or influence decisions tied to naturalization applications.

Central to the case are findings from an investigative panel led by Myron Nikolatos, which documented serious loopholes, oversight failures, and suspected interventions within the program. According to the prosecution, key evidence was never placed before the Council of Ministers at the time, something they say may have affected government decisions.

The defense has forcefully rejected the allegations, claiming the proceedings themselves are flawed. Lawyers argue there has been an abuse of legal process and insist their clients’ right to a fair trial was violated.

Today’s ruling will decide whether the two former power brokers walk free or are found guilty, a judgment that could echo far beyond the courtroom, given the scandal’s impact on Cyprus’ political credibility and international reputation.

Recap:

The case centers on accusations that two former top officials used their influence to help wealthy foreigners obtain Cypriot citizenship through the now-defunct investment program, a controversy first exposed by undercover footage that triggered investigations, public outrage, and sweeping reforms.
