Wave of overnight bombings rocks Nicosia and Limassol

Cars and shops targeted with homemade explosives as police probe rising criminal activity

Newsroom

Authorities were on high alert Friday after a string of overnight bombings in Nicosia and Limassol, in what appears to be a wave of arson and explosive attacks by criminal elements.

According to police, the first incident occurred around 2:15 a.m. in the Nicosia district, when an explosion went off in a 60-year-old man's car parked outside his home. The blast damaged the rear of the vehicle. A police bomb squad investigation confirmed the use of an explosive device. The area was sealed off and remains under police guard for further examination.

Roughly an hour later, at around 3:50 a.m., another explosion hit a 26-year-old man's car parked outside his residence in Limassol. Investigators determined that the blast was caused by a homemade metal explosive device packed with low-grade explosives. The car sustained significant damage. The scene was immediately cordoned off and is under continuous police watch.

In a third incident around the same time, attackers placed another explosive device in front of a glass storefront office in Limassol. The resulting blast caused major damage to the office’s front window and to the display of a neighboring shop.

Preliminary findings suggest the device was made from a pipe filled with low-intensity explosives. This scene too remains sealed off and under police surveillance.

Police are continuing their investigations into the incidents.
