Deputy Minister of Culture, Vasiliki Kassianidou, announced on Monday that the official process was launched through which the cities of Cyprus are invited to submit an application to claim the title of the 2030 European Capital of Culture.

In a statement, Kassianidou said that winning the title of the 2030 European Capital of Culture will result in huge benefits for Cyprus, and even greater ones for the city that will win the title, since it will gain recognition and prospects for further growth and progress.

The Deputy Minister explained that the process provides for two phases, the pre-selection phase and the selection phase.

She said that the pre-selection phase will end on December 13, 2024, with the submission of proposals/applications by the cities, while the final selection is expected to be completed by the end of 2025 when the winning city will be announced.

Kassianidou said that based on EU decisions, the title of European Capital of Culture 2030 is awarded to a city in Cyprus, to a city in Belgium, and to a city of a third country, which is a candidate country or potential candidate for EU membership.

She recalled that Paphos was in 2017 the first city in Cyprus to receive the title of European Capital of Culture.
