Who’s really raking it in? A peek at Cyprus’ government salaries

Spoiler alert: The President isn't the top earner, and the Attorney General is living large.

The latest update from the General Accounting Office of the Republic has revealed the salaries of Cyprus’s state officials, effective from January 1, 2025. Contrary to popular belief, the President of the Republic is not the highest-paid official, with several other positions earning slightly more annually.

Top-Earning Officials

According to the General Accounting Office, four officials have surpassed the President’s salary. The highest earners, each receiving a net annual salary of €117,035, include:

- Attorney General
- Assistant Attorney General
- President/Judge of the Supreme Constitutional Court
- President/Judge of the Supreme Court of Justice

These four positions take the lead in the state payroll, outpacing the President's earnings.

Presidential Remuneration

While the President of the Republic doesn't top the list, his salary remains substantial. Effective January 1, 2025, the President’s total annual net salary stands at €115,339. This is broken down as follows:

- Basic salary: €100,793
- Annual salary: €31,488
- Performance allowance: €30,755
- Bonus: €9,608
- Total annual deductions before tax: €21,784
- Income tax: €46,544

Other Notable Salaries

Further down the list, a range of other high-ranking officials earn competitive salaries:

- President/Judges of the Court of Appeal: €105,647
- President of the District/Administrative Court: €94,252
- Judges of the Commercial Court / Judges of the Maritime Court: €94,252
- President of the House of Representatives: €93,774
- President of the Consumer Protection Commission: €93,270
- Chairman of the Civil Service Commission: €92,452
- Auditor General: €90,977
- Chief of Police: €90,977
- Commander of the KYP (Secret Service of Cyprus): €90,977
- Director-General of a Ministry / Deputy Ministry / Directorate General: €90,977
- Director-General of the Parliament: €90,977
- Accountant General: €90,977
- Chief Registrar: €90,977

Other officials such as the Chairman of the Education Service Commission (€88,277) and the Commissioner for Administration (€86,976) also appear among the top earners.

Lower-Earning Posts

Meanwhile, certain government roles still command strong salaries, though they rank lower on the list:

- President of courts: €80,143
- Senior district judge/judge of court: €80,143
- Director of the Office of the President of the Republic: €80,006
- Commissioner for the Protection of Personal Data: €79,366
- Director of a department with a fixed salary: €78,500

Ministers and Commissioners

Ministers, deputy ministers, and government spokespersons earn €76,410 annually, the same as the Law Commissioner and the Commissioner for the Protection of Children's Rights.

This update provides a transparent look at the remuneration of Cyprus’s state officials and shows that while the President is certainly well-compensated, other positions in the judicial and governmental system surpass his salary.
