A tragic car accident in Lakatameia claimed the life of a 55-year-old woman on Tuesday morning, sending shockwaves through the local community.
The victim, Wasantha Wajirani Liyanage from Sri Lanka, was behind the wheel when her car collided with a truck at around 7 a.m. on Archbishop Makariou Avenue, heading from Deftera towards Lakatameia.
What exactly led to the collision is still under investigation, but initial reports say her vehicle crashed into a truck driven by a 27-year-old man, who had a 23-year-old passenger with him. Emergency services rushed to the scene and transported the woman to Nicosia General Hospital, where doctors sadly pronounced her dead.
The truck driver was arrested on a court warrant and is currently in custody as police work to piece together what went wrong.
The Nicosia Traffic Police are leading the investigation and are appealing to any witnesses to come forward. The crash brings yet another reminder of how quickly tragedy can strike on our roads.
