New ATMs reach remote corners of Cyprus

Banks roll out 11 new machines and expand cashback options to make life easier in villages and hard-to-reach areas.

If you live in a village or remote area, getting access to cash just got a little easier.

At the start of the year, Cyprus’ two biggest banks agreed to install 11 new ATMs across the island, targeting areas that were previously underserved. Now, most of those machines are already up and running, making it simpler for people in remote and mountainous regions to withdraw money without having to drive long distances.

The update was shared this week with MPs on the Commerce Committee, along with a map showing where each new ATM has been placed. These new additions are the result of months of coordination between banks, government departments, and local authorities.

Here’s how the rollout unfolded:

January 2025: The agreement to install the ATMs was officially announced.
March: Banks and officials began planning and scouting locations.
April: Final decisions were made on where to install the machines.
May: Most of the new ATMs were installed, tested and switched on.

For residents in these areas, it’s a small but meaningful improvement, especially in places where bank branches have shut down and digital banking isn’t always an option for older generations.

But that’s not the only way to get cash these days.

The Cyprus Association of Banks also reminded the public that over 400 “cashback” points are now available across the country. These include supermarkets, kiosks, petrol stations, and bakeries. If you’re paying by card, you can ask to withdraw up to €100 in cash per transaction, a handy option if there’s no ATM nearby.

The combined effort is meant to make sure everyone, no matter where they live, has access to basic banking services.

As one local councillor in the mountains put it, “It’s not just about convenience. For some of our residents, this means independence.”
