Workers across all cities celebrated International Workers' Day this year with various events and demonstrations, led by the Pancyprian Federation of Labour (PEO) organizing marches in every city.
In Nicosia, the central event and march took place simultaneously with Turkish Cypriot trade unions. Starting with a gathering at Eleftheria Square, speeches were delivered by PEO Secretary General Sotiroula Charalambous and AKEL Secretary General Stefanos Stefanou. The demonstration continued with a march merging with the procession of Turkish Cypriot unions at the Ledra Palace checkpoint, where an artistic program was presented.
The Confederation of Revolutionary Trade Unions (SEK) organized an event at its headquarters in Nicosia, with SEK Secretary General Andreas Matsas as the main speaker. Labor Minister Yiannis Panayiotou addressed the gathering.
Other trade unions, in their declarations, honored May Day and pledged to continue their advocacy for better working conditions and quality of life for workers.
Political parties and other organizations also marked International Workers' Day with announcements and declarations.
