Cyprus recorded another year of improvement in workplace safety in 2025, with the rate of reported occupational accidents falling for the eighth consecutive year, according to the Labour Inspection Department of the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance.
The department's latest analysis shows the workplace Accident Rate dropped by 7.2% compared with 2024. Since 2017, the rate has fallen by 55.3%, a result the department attributes to continued investment in accident prevention and safer working practices.
Several sectors posted notable improvements during 2025. Hotels and restaurants recorded a 7.3% reduction in the Accident Rate, wholesale and retail trade saw a 15.2% decrease, while transport and storage registered an 8.8% decline.
Construction and manufacturing continued to record the highest number of workplace accidents, although both industries have made substantial progress over the longer term. Since 2019, the Accident Rate has fallen by 42.5% in construction and by 39.6% in manufacturing.
Compared with the previous year, however, both sectors experienced an increase. The Accident Rate rose by 3.9% in construction and by 11.7% in manufacturing during 2025.
Construction accounted for a larger share of all reported workplace accidents, rising to 18% in 2025 from 15.3% a year earlier.
Falls remained the leading cause of occupational accidents, making up 31.4% of all reported incidents across Cyprus and 38.7% of those recorded in the construction industry.
The Labour Inspection Department said additional preventive action is needed, particularly on construction sites. A public awareness campaign focusing on falls from height has been running since March 2026 across traditional and social media.
According to Eurostat data cited by the ministry, Cyprus continues to record an Accident Rate below the European Union average. Authorities said work will continue to strengthen workplace safety and pursue the goal of zero workplace accidents.
The analysis includes workplace accidents that resulted in employees being absent from work for more than three calendar days.
