The Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Works has approved yet another extension for the construction of the Nicosia peripheral motorway, pushing the completion date to mid-August 2024. This latest extension, announced Monday, follows a series of delays attributed to adverse weather conditions and additional work requirements.
Initially, the Departmental Committee on Changes and Claims (CACC) approved an extension until June 16, 2024, after the contractor, Cyfield, cited adverse weather conditions. A subsequent request led to an additional extension until June 25, 2024.
From July 15 onward, the Ministry will impose penalties of €5,500 per day for any undue delay until the project's completion.
Cyfield has since submitted further extension requests, covering the period from January 1, 2024, to the present, due to continued adverse weather conditions, particularly high temperatures, and additional work demands. These requests, reviewed under the newly established procedures by the Technical Evaluation Authority (TEA) and the Central Claims and Claims Committee (CCC), resulted in an approved extension to July 15, 2024.
From July 15 onward, the Ministry will impose penalties of €5,500 per day for any undue delay until the project's completion. Despite these extensions, the contractor has committed to delivering the motorway by mid-August, with the exception of a small section on Cheriou Avenue, which will be completed later but is not expected to impact the motorway's overall operation.
