Makarios Hospital is set to gain a new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) after the contract for the project was officially awarded, according to the head of the Parliamentary Health Committee, DISY MP Efthymios Diplaros.
Speaking after a committee meeting on 26 February, Diplaros said construction is expected to begin between late March and early April, once contracts, anticipated within the next two weeks, are signed. If the current timeline is maintained, the new unit should be ready to open by the end of July 2027.
The project had previously stalled due to significant issues involving the former contractor. Diplaros noted that the State Health Services Organisation (OKYpY) has now reassigned the project to a new contractor while retaining the same architect, clearing the way for work to finally move forward.
The NICU development is budgeted at approximately €10 million. The funding has been incorporated into OKYpY’s budget submitted to the parliamentary committee, whose members indicated the spending plan is moving in the right direction.
During the same session, the Health Committee also continued its detailed review of the Ambulance Service bill. Lawmakers expect to conclude the article-by-article examination next Thursday, after which the legislation will proceed to the House plenary.
