Conservation and restoration works are progressing at a series of historic churches in the Famagusta district, with projects either underway or in preparation at monuments in Frenaros and Liopetri.

According to the Deputy Ministry of Culture, restoration activity is currently focused on several Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches, with funding allocated for structural repairs, wall painting conservation and archaeological work.

At the Church of Panagia Eleousa in Liopetri, construction works nearing completion are expected to cost around €100,000. The project forms part of a programme led by the Department of Antiquities to preserve religious monuments considered important to the island’s architectural and cultural history.

In Frenaros, studies are being carried out ahead of restoration work at the churches of Panagia Asprovouniotissa and Saints Andronikos and Athanasia. Authorities are preparing conservation plans for both sites before physical works begin.

Restoration efforts have already advanced at the Church of Archangel Michael, where building works have been completed. Conservation specialists are continuing work on the church’s wall paintings, while preparations are also being made to open the monument to visitors.

At the Church of Saint Marina, archaeological excavation of a medieval cemetery has been completed, clearing the way for restoration and conservation works to begin. The total cost of the project is estimated at €300,000.

The Deputy Ministry of Culture said the projects are intended to protect historic monuments while improving public access for future generations.

Digital tourism initiatives are also being introduced at some sites. Interactive 360-degree virtual tours have been developed for the churches of Panagia Asprovouniotissa and Archangel Michael by the Famagusta Tourism Development Company as part of efforts to modernise the visitor experience.
