A proposal by MEP Andreas Apostolou aims to raise the extrajudicial fine from €300 to €500, following a significant reduction in violations after a prior increase.

In response to a significant reduction in illegal parking in disabled areas following a prior extrajudicial fine increase, the Transport Committee is considering another proposal by MEP Andreas Apostolou to further raise the fine from €300 to €500.

The Parliamentary Committee on Transport, Communications, and Works discussed the issue, noting a 40% decrease in violations after the previous fine increase. Apostolou emphasized the unanimous support of disability organizations for the proposed law and acknowledged differing opinions.  Technical changes are under consideration, with the proposal potentially returning to the Committee for further discussion and subsequent plenary voting.

Dimitris Lambrianides, President of the Cyprus Paraplegics Organisation, supported the proposal, urging proper maintenance of disabled parking spaces and enhanced tools for law enforcement. Lambrianides advocated for towing illegally parked vehicles and applying extrajudicial fines to private areas with restricted access. He also called for improved methods like photographing offenders and sending fines by post.
