The Department of Road Transport (DOT) has issued an important reminder to vehicle owners in Cyprus about the ongoing recall of vehicles with defective parts, including Takata airbags. The department clarified that the list of affected vehicles is continually updated with new information from manufacturers and their distributors. Vehicle owners are urged to regularly check if their vehicle is subject to recall to ensure road safety.

Why Are Recalls Important?
Recalls play a crucial role in protecting consumers from potentially hazardous products. If a vehicle’s components, systems, or technical units pose a risk to road safety or public health, the manufacturer is legally required to address the issue and take corrective action. This ensures that vehicles remain safe to drive on the roads.
How to Check if Your Vehicle is Affected
If you own a new vehicle registered in Cyprus with European type approval, you can easily check if it is part of a recall by visiting the manufacturer’s website or contacting the dealer. You can input your vehicle’s chassis number (also known as the Vehicle Identification Number or VIN) on these platforms to determine if it is affected.
For vehicles registered second-hand in Cyprus that were previously registered in the European Union or the UK, owners should contact the vehicle’s manufacturer’s distributor in Cyprus. Some distributors also offer a service to register used vehicles from EU countries in their database, providing the same recall information as for new vehicles.
For vehicles that were previously registered in non-EU countries, such as Japan or Australia, owners should reach out to the manufacturer’s distributor directly. Although third-party websites may offer some information, the DOT emphasizes that these lists may not be complete and may not always be reliable.
What to Do If Your Vehicle is Affected by a Takata Airbag Recall
Takata airbags have been linked to serious safety risks, and if your vehicle is subject to a recall for faulty airbags, it’s critical to contact your manufacturer’s distributor immediately. A malfunctioning airbag could lead to serious injury if deployed.
Owner Responsibilities
As a vehicle owner, it’s your responsibility to ensure that your vehicle is in a safe condition. This includes checking for any recalls or defects that could pose a danger to the driver, passengers, or others on the road. Vehicle owners are also encouraged to update their contact details with the Department of Road Transport through the official website, ensuring they receive timely notifications about any recalls or important updates.
For more details, vehicle owners can visit the Department of Road Transport's website at [www.mcw.gov.cy/rtd](http://www.mcw.gov.cy/rtd), where they can find further instructions and links to the manufacturer’s recall pages.
The Department of Road Transport reminds that the recall lists are not exhaustive and are continually updated. Owners should regularly check for updates to ensure the safety of their vehicles and avoid any potential risks related to defective parts.
