Cyprus proposes opening Turkish port to Cypriot ships

Cyprus offers Turkey a chance to lift the 1987 port ban in exchange for concessions on EU visas for Turkish businessmen. Will this spark new diplomatic progress?

In a move that could significantly alter Cyprus-Turkey relations, Cyprus has reportedly made a proposal to Turkey to open one of its ports to Cypriot-flagged ships, a long-standing issue that has been unresolved since 1987. The proposal, revealed by the Greek newspaper TA NEA on Saturday, has sparked widespread discussion and raised questions about the potential for diplomatic progress.

Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis spoke about the issue Monday morning on state radio’s show. He chose not to directly comment on the TA NEA article but confirmed that Cyprus is pursuing more active involvement from the European Union in its dealings with Turkey, particularly concerning Euro-Turkish relations.

Since 1987, Turkey has imposed a ban preventing Cypriot-flagged ships from docking in Turkish ports, an embargo that has been a major point of contention in the region.

"We’re focused on the importance of Euro-Turkish relations," Letymbiotis said, "and making sure that Turkey fulfills its obligations to Cyprus. We’ve been clear that progress on Turkey’s aspirations towards the European Union should be proportional to its commitment to resolve issues with Cyprus."

The proposal to open Turkish ports to Cypriot ships comes after decades of restrictions. Since 1987, Turkey has imposed a ban preventing Cypriot-flagged ships from docking in Turkish ports, an embargo that has been a major point of contention in the region. In exchange for this significant step, Cyprus is reportedly willing to consider easing visa restrictions for Turkish businessmen entering the European Union. However, Letymbiotis emphasized that this would be a very specific concession and would not apply to Turkish nationals more generally.

Though no official response has been received from Ankara as of yet, the Cypriot government remains hopeful that this proposal could mark the beginning of a new phase in diplomatic relations. The government spokesman made it clear that Cyprus will continue to push for Turkey to meet its Cyprus-related obligations if any progress is to be made on the matter.

Letymbiotis also highlighted that this initiative is a part of the broader strategy to work with the EU to ensure that Turkey meets its obligations regarding Cyprus. "This is not just about lifting restrictions; it’s about Turkey fulfilling its duties under the agreements we’ve made," he added.

It’s still unclear whether Turkey is genuinely prepared to act on the proposal, with Letymbiotis noting that there has been no formal response from Turkey through official channels. However, the Cypriot government seems ready to move forward if Turkey shows willingness to follow through.
