Elon Musk raises disturbing questions about OpenAI's internal strife

The ominous departure and swift return of Sam Altman spark concerns about hidden dangers in artificial intelligence

In a recent interview at the Dealbook Summit, Elon Musk shared his concerns about the sudden departure and return of Sam Altman at OpenAI, a company Musk co-founded. While acknowledging mixed feelings about Altman, Musk raised questions about the power dynamics within OpenAI, referencing "The Lord of the Rings" and the potential corrupting influence. Musk expressed particular interest in understanding why OpenAI's chief scientist, Ilya Sutskever, strongly opposed Altman, suggesting a potential discovery of a dangerous AI element.

The reasons behind Altman's initial removal from OpenAI's board remain unclear. Reports indicate conflicting information, with Altman's statement to the board about personnel matters allegedly being a factor. Altman's reinstatement followed a strong response from OpenAI employees, threatening mass resignations if he was not brought back.

Sutskever, initially supporting Altman's ousting, later seemed to backtrack on the issue. Musk defended Sutskever, emphasizing his "strong moral compass" and calling for transparency regarding Altman's removal.

Musk, who left OpenAI's board in 2018 to create the competing AI venture X.ai, highlighted the need for clarity on the reasons behind the internal dispute. Musk and Altman have a history of exchanging criticisms on social media, with Altman recently describing Musk's AI bot as "cringey boomer humor."

Musk has consistently warned about the potential dangers of AI technology, urging companies to exercise caution due to its potential risks to the public. OpenAI has yet to provide a detailed response to Musk's concerns.
