Leaders meet amid concerns over delayed GSI agreement

Athens pushes for Cyprus' firm commitment on key energy project funding

Newsroom

A summit meeting between Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides is set for Thursday, amid growing tensions over the future of the electricity interconnection project between Crete and Cyprus.

The dissatisfaction stems from Cyprus' recent cabinet decision, which delays the country’s financial commitment to the project until December 2024. This has raised concerns in Athens, where officials worry Cyprus is questioning the project's viability.

Greece views the establishment of a regulatory framework and Cyprus’ contribution of €100 million to the Great Sea Interconnector as essential to moving forward. Both sides hope to resolve these issues at the summit.
