Nearly €158,000 in fines imposed for undeclared and illegal Labor

Focused inspections conducted during August 28 to September 22 netted a number of companies employing illegal workers

In a series of targeted measures and inspections by the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance and the Ministry of Interior, 204 illegal workers and 98 undeclared workers were found to be working at businesses, and as a result, administrative fines of €157,900 were issued against these companies.

According to a statement issued today by the Ministry of Labor, the targeted checks were carried out as part of a campaign that began on August 28 and ended on September 22.

The announcement stated that 418 inspections were carried out by the Inspection Service of the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance, mainly at construction sites, leisure centres and hotels, and 1,387 employers were examined.

Of these, 98 or 7% were undeclared, of which 66% or 67 people were foreigners from third countries, the ministry said, adding that administrative fines totalling €157,900 were issued.

According to the data, of the 1,387 employers, 36% or 502 people were foreigners from third countries.

An important finding is that of the 502 persons (third-country nationals) identified, 40.6% or 204 persons were illegally employed

The majority of the illegally employed persons, or 88 persons, were found in Paphos, with the Ministry noting that of these, 30 persons were illegally employed, 9 persons were with false documents and 48 persons were illegally resident.

This was followed by Nicosia, where 54 illegal foreign workers from third countries were detected, of which 24 persons were illegally employed, 6 persons were with false documents and 24 persons were illegally resident.

In Limassol, 33 illegal foreign workers from third countries were detected, of which 28 were illegally employed, 2 were with false documents and 3 were illegal residents.

Finally, in Larnaca, 29 illegal foreign workers from third countries were detected. Of these, 10 people were illegally employed, 4 people were with false documents and 15 people were illegally resident, the Ministry concludes.
