New prison to be built by 2027, Menoyia to be dedicated to minors

Government targets prison overcrowding, new detention center for children

The construction of a new Central Prison building, set for completion in 2027, and the conversion of the Menoyia facilities into a detention center for children were approved by the Cabinet, Justice Minister Marios Hartsiotis announced Wednesday evening.

Hartsiotis said the final decision for the new Central Prison had been made, with the facility expected to house around 340-350 inmates by 2027 or 2028. The new prison aims to address the long-standing issue of overcrowding. "We hope this will largely resolve the overcrowding problem at the Central Prison," he said.

The Cabinet also addressed the need for a dedicated children’s detention center. Due to time constraints and other logistical concerns, the existing Menoyia facility, currently used for illegal immigrants, will be repurposed.

The Menoyia building is expected to be available by the end of 2025, as new projects in the Limnes area will house immigrants currently detained there, Hartsiotis added.
