Toyota opens emergency center for TAKATA airbag replacements

Temporary facility at the Cyprus State Fair aims to fast-track repairs for grey-imported Toyota vehicles before November 2025 deadline.

Newsroom

Toyota Cyprus has announced the opening of a dedicated emergency center at the Cyprus State Fair in Nicosia starting April 7. The goal? To accelerate the replacement of faulty TAKATA airbags in thousands of Toyota vehicles imported from non-European markets without official Toyota approval.

These so-called "grey imports", cars brought in from Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Australia, and other countries, were sold as second-hand vehicles through independent dealers or private sellers. Since they lack European Type Approval (EU-WVTA), they were not officially tracked under Toyota’s standard recall system.

A Race Against Time

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Toyota Cyprus has set up a temporary facility at Pavilion 3 of the State Fairgrounds to handle a higher volume of airbag replacements. Skilled technicians from across Europe and large stockpiles of airbags shipped directly from Japan have been brought in to streamline the process.

Owners who have already applied online will be contacted soon to schedule their appointments. Those who have not yet applied are strongly urged to do so immediately, as the center will only serve customers with confirmed appointments, no walk-ins will be accepted.

The facility will operate until the end of November 2025, so Toyota Cyprus advises all affected owners to act early to avoid last-minute delays.

How to Check If Your Vehicle is Affected

Toyota Cyprus is reminding owners to verify if their vehicle is part of the recall and follow the correct procedure based on its origin:

- Non-European (Grey Imports) Toyota Vehicles (Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, etc.):
Check recall status and apply at https://www.toyota.com.cy/forms/recall-enquiry

- European-Spec Toyota Vehicles (UK, Ireland, etc.):
Use https://forms.toyota.com.cy/recalls/eu-form-en to schedule a replacement at official Toyota service centers.

For further information, owners can call the Toyota Recall Information Centre at +357 22285700.

Toyota’s Commitment to Safety

Toyota Cyprus has already replaced over 19,000 TAKATA airbags as part of its long-running global recall campaign. In just the past few months, an additional 5,000 airbags have been replaced.

However, 80% of pending replacements involve grey-imported vehicles, which were not originally intended for the European market. Despite this, Toyota Cyprus has voluntarily stepped in to ensure that all Toyota owners, whether they purchased their vehicle through official channels or not, can drive safely.

With time running out and safety on the line, Toyota urges all affected vehicle owners to take action now before the temporary emergency center closes in November 2025.
