The Municipality of Athienou and the Larnaca Tourism Development and Promotion Company have completed an artistic project that brings local cultural heritage to the streets. Six bus shelters in the town have been transformed with beautiful artworks inspired by traditional local embroidery.
The theme of the artwork focuses on the Dantelles Venis, also known as pittotes, and Athenian all-over lace, a craft recognized in 2015 as part of Cyprus’s National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The aim of this project is to raise awareness and promote this unique local craft through a modern artistic lens, making it visible to both locals and visitors alike.
The project was coordinated by the Kallinikio Municipal Museum of Athienou, with the support of local artists Irini Klokkari, Christiana Pougerasi, and Chrysostomos Kitas. Each artist contributed their own creative vision, resulting in six distinct and original artworks displayed on the bus shelters.
The Municipality of Athienou and the Larnaca Tourism Development and Promotion Company encourage both residents and visitors to take a moment to enjoy these outdoor pieces, photograph them, and play an active role in preserving the area’s cultural heritage.
The project was also supported by the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, which the organizers thanked for its contribution to bringing this idea to life.
