The Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation is bringing back its open-air summer cinema programme as part of the FANEROMENI26 Arts Festival, offering free film screenings for audiences of all ages throughout July and August in central Nicosia.

The screenings will take place at the foundation’s amphitheatre on Faneromeni Street and are being organised in cooperation with the Friends of Cinema Club.

The programme opens on July 2 with William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet, Baz Luhrmann’s contemporary adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic tragedy. Set in a modern American city, the film follows the forbidden relationship between the children of two rival families whose long-standing feud turns their community into a battleground. The screening begins at 8.30pm and is intended for viewers aged 16 and over.

Family audiences will have the opportunity to watch Disney’s 2025 live-action version of Lilo & Stitch on July 23. The film revisits the story of a young Hawaiian girl who forms an unlikely bond with a mischievous alien creature. Featuring tropical Hawaiian scenery and themes of family and belonging, the movie starts at 8pm and will be shown dubbed in Greek with Greek subtitles.

On August 6, the festival continues with Tim Burton’s fantasy drama Big Fish. The film centres on Edward Bloom, a man famous for recounting extraordinary stories about his life. As his health declines, his son attempts to separate fact from fiction and understand the truth behind the tales. The acclaimed production received an Academy Award nomination for Danny Elfman’s score as well as four Golden Globe nominations.

The final screening on August 27 is Burton’s live-action adaptation of Dumbo. Based on the classic story of a flying elephant, the film follows a struggling circus that experiences an unexpected revival after discovering the remarkable abilities of a young elephant with oversized ears. The cast includes Colin Farrell, Eva Green, Michael Keaton and Danny DeVito. The screening begins at 8pm.

Admission to all screenings is free. Evening performances start at 8.30pm, with entry from 8pm, while children’s films begin at 8pm.

Organisers said all events will be conducted under the necessary health and safety measures and that the venue is accessible to people with disabilities and other visitors with mobility needs.

Attendees should be aware that photographs and video recordings may be taken during the events and used for promotional, media or online purposes.
