700 flights grounded at Schiphol as Europe freezes over

Snow and ice strand thousands while winter chaos hits Paris and beyond.

Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport canceled at least 700 flights Wednesday, leaving more than 1,000 travelers stuck overnight as heavy snow and freezing temperatures swept across Europe. Airport officials said tents were set up for passengers forced to spend the night, and breakfast was provided to those stranded.

The disruption comes amid a week of unusually severe winter weather across the continent. In France, authorities reported five deaths from road accidents caused by icy conditions. Paris airports were also affected, with around 100 flights canceled at Charles de Gaulle and another 40 at Orly.

The French meteorological service described the cold as “of a rare intensity for the season,” urging residents in the Paris region to avoid unnecessary travel and work from home if possible.

Airports and transport authorities across Europe continue to grapple with snow, frost, and icy roads, warning travelers to expect ongoing delays as winter storms persist.
