A two-year-old girl injured in a dog attack in the village of Foini was mauled by a pit bull, authorities confirmed after veterinary specialists reviewed the case.
Veterinary officials examined the animal and consulted breed experts, noting that confusion often arises between pit bulls and similar breeds. The dog was originally registered with a microchip as an American Staffordshire Terrier, but inspectors determined it was in fact a pit bull, a breed banned under Cypriot law.
Despite the attack, veterinarians concluded the dog does not show signs of general aggression. That means the animal will not be put down, but will instead be subject to strict conditions under the law. Prohibited breeds must be sterilized, muzzled in public, insured for liability, and leashed by handlers at least 16 years old. Local authorities are now responsible for enforcing those restrictions.
Police said the 24-year-old owner has been charged with negligent and reckless behavior and with failing to properly supervise the dog. She was released pending a court appearance.
