Monks deposed in connection with the Avvakoum scandal are preparing to fight back with a forthcoming book titled 'Church - The Mafia State of Cyprus', which promises to expose controversial aspects of the Church's inner workings. According to reports from the Greek channel STAR, the monks claim to possess dialogues and evidence implicating individuals close to Bishop Isaias of Tamassos and Orini.
One of the messages allegedly involves an archimandrite or monk asking a young devotee, "I want you madly. What sign are you?" The devotee is said to have rebuffed the advance, questioning the cleric's behavior and his position as a priest.
The release of the book comes after the Church of Cyprus's Synodal Court ruled to depose the three monks involved in the scandal—Nectarios Georgiou, Porphyrios Toulou, and Avvakoum Christofi—stripping them of their priestly duties following a seven-month investigation. Although deposition bars them from conducting sacraments and other religious rites, the monks may still retain their monastic status.
