Avvakoum: Synodal Court removes two monks amid misconduct allegations

Monks appeal decision as legal battle against Metropolitan Isaiah looms

The Synodal Court of the Church of Cyprus has removed Archimandrites Nektarios and Porphyrios from their positions following allegations related to financial and moral misconduct at the Holy Monastery of Saint Abbacum. The decision, made on Wednesday, comes after the two monks, who were on leave during the investigation, were called to defend themselves before the court.

Additionally, Hieromonk Abbacum has been deposed, a severe measure that strips him of his priestly duties. According to church sources, deposition means the individuals can no longer perform sacraments, rites, or liturgies, although they may retain their monastic status unless further action is taken.

Reports suggest that Nektarios, Porphyrios, and Abbacum plan to appeal the court's ruling in civil courts, with their legal efforts directed against Metropolitan Isaiah of Tamassos and Mountains.

The case has been closely watched, as the decision was delayed to allow for a second expert’s opinion on the evidence. This expert’s findings have now been reviewed by the Synodal Court, leading to today's ruling.

Should an appeal be filed, the Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus, which acts as an appellate court, will be convened to address the issue of the monks' removal.

Church insiders say the case has already seen testimonies from both prosecution and defense witnesses, as well as input from an initial expert who confirmed the authenticity of the evidence. If the Holy Synod becomes involved, the final resolution could be further delayed.

The church’s decision to depose the monks follows concerns about misconduct, although details of the allegations remain largely confidential.
