Behind the power games in DISY

As the political party aims to reclaim power, it continues to struggle in defining its political direction

Annita Demetriou, the current president of Cyprus's Democratic Rally (DISY) party, recently addressed speculation about her potential candidacy for the 2028 presidential elections, calling the discussion premature, according to an article by Marina Economidou published in Sunday's Kathimerini. Despite her attempts to downplay the issue, her remarks have intensified focus on her strained relationship with her predecessor, Averof Neofytou, and the broader internal dynamics of DISY.

Demetriou's comments suggesting that Neofytou, who led the party before her, had "been tried and tested" and should now be set aside have revived old tensions within the party. This echoes similar intra-party conflicts that contributed to DISY's defeat in the 2023 presidential election, underscoring a recurring theme of discord over leadership and direction. The party's internal strife is compounded by its unclear political identity and lack of cohesive policy positions.

Neofytou, although no longer party president, remains an influential figure. He continues to exert political influence and is positioning himself as a potential candidate for future elections, leveraging his parliamentary support and aiming to capitalize on what he anticipates will be a decline in President Nikos Christodoulides' popularity. This situation has heightened the rivalry between him and Demetriou, leading to significant internal debates about the party's future and leadership.

Additionally, the handling of key policy issues, such as the controversial electrical interconnection project, has further strained relationships within DISY. Demetriou's management of the project has led to internal friction, reflecting broader issues of policy coherence within the party.

Harris Georgiades, a prominent DISY figure, has also drawn attention. Speculation about his political future suggests he may be positioning himself for a significant role, despite discussions about his potential retirement. His involvement in the party's recent activities, including his close relations with Demetriou and discussions with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, highlights the shifting alliances and power dynamics within DISY.

As DISY navigates these internal conflicts and prepares for future elections, it faces the challenge of defining its political direction and addressing the legacy of former President Nicos Anastasiades. The party's response to ongoing scandals and its ability to unify under a clear leadership strategy will be critical as it looks toward the 2028 elections.
