A local man died in the hospital on Thursday after he was seriously injured in a road accident in Paralimni a day earlier, with reports saying his motorcycle was split in two following a brutal collision.
Police said 35-year-old Yiorgos Koronides from Paralimni was riding his high-power motorcycle on Wednesday early evening around 7:45pm when he got involved in an accident.
Just before the accident, Koronides, who was single and lived with his parents, had just left work at Famagusta General where he worked as a nurse
An official report did not provide details but Paralimni police deputy director Steve Theodoulou told Knews that Koronides was moving east on Adamantiou Korai Street when he collided with a car driven by a 36-year-old local female.
According to Theodoulou, preliminary findings suggested that the biker had just overtaken another vehicle when at the exact same time the local woman driving from the opposite direction was attempting to make a right turn into her apartment building.
“The collision split the motorcycle in two, with the biker striking the pavement and the two parts hitting two different vehicles,” Theodoulou said.
Koronides was rushed to the Emergency Room at Famagusta General Hospital where he was put on life support and then transferred to Nicosia General where he succumbed to his injuries Thursday early morning around 2am.
Police said the biker was wearing his protective helmet at the time of the incident.
