Cyprus President, Nikos Christodoulides, is expected to participate in the Summit of the Future, a high-level global summit convened by the United Nations (UN), which will take place on Monday 23rd of September 2024 at the UNHQ in New York.
The Summit of the Future is initiated by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and is part of the UN's broader efforts to address critical global challenges and reform the international system to make it future-ready. The session builds on the UN's 2020 Declaration on the 75th anniversary of the international organization and aims to reinvigorate global cooperation.
The Summit of the Future aims to provide a platform for world leaders, civil society, and other stakeholders to discuss a wide range of global challenges. Some of the key objectives include:
Strengthening Multilateralism: The summit focuses on bolstering multilateral cooperation to address global issues like climate change, pandemics, and inequality, ensuring that international systems are more resilient and adaptable.
Adopting the Pact for the Future: A central outcome of the summit is expected to be the adoption of a Pact for the Future, a commitment to enhance international governance on global challenges, including climate action, digital transformation, peace and security, and sustainable development.
Addressing Global Challenges: The summit will tackle issues such as geopolitical tensions, economic instability, human rights, digital governance, and threats to global peace. It aims to set a future-oriented agenda to resolve these issues through collaborative global action.
Reforming Global Institutions: Another major theme will be the reform of global institutions, including the UN itself, to better reflect current geopolitical realities and ensure more equitable representation for developing countries.
Global Governance: Reforming and strengthening international institutions to ensure they are better equipped to deal with crises like pandemics and climate change.
Climate Action: Promoting global cooperation on climate change mitigation and adaptation.
Peace and Security: Addressing emerging threats to international peace, such as cyber-attacks, the proliferation of advanced weaponry, and conflict resolution mechanisms.
