The Supreme Constitutional Court began its session at 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday to deliberate on Attorney General George Savvides' request for the dismissal of Auditor General Odysseas Michailidis over alleged "improper conduct."
Michailidis arrived at the court shortly after 9 a.m., followed by Savvides. A significant number of supporters and journalists have gathered in the courtroom for the case.
The court is expected to announce its decision, which will determine whether Michailidis should be removed from his position due to his alleged behavior.
Live updates
The court has reviewed Michailidis' defense, including claims of attacks by Savvides and Assistant Attorney General.
The council also referenced the Erotokritos case, which was previously dismissed by the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).
Court President Antonis Liatsos discussed the conflict's key points and mentioned a Facebook support group for Michailidis.
The decision, which is unanimous, spans 209 pages and will be binding.
Background
During the hearings from late June to mid-July 2024, both sides argued their positions vigorously. The Attorney General's side claimed that the conduct issues in the Erotokritos case apply to Michailidis, while Michailidis' team argued there is no comparable evidence.
Legal expert Achilleas Emiliani has stated that the court’s decision will be final and binding. If Michailidis is dismissed, he may appeal to the ECHR, but this will not affect the immediate implementation of the court's decision.
