With the school year kicking off on Monday, September 7, school authorities are rushing to prepare classrooms that would host students in line with government health protocols.
One of the broadly-discussed issues at present are the desk arrangements, with Education Minister Prodromos Prodromou stressing a few days ago that “school authorities have received instructions to arrange classrooms and desks so in a way allows the adherence of the health protocol governing schools.”
With preparations currently at full speed, classrooms will feature long desks – two normal two-student desks joined together by a plank of wood, with the entire structure to fit three students at appropriate distances – and single desks.
Health protocols
According to the health protocol for primary schools, each student will have their own desk and chair, which will be used daily and for the entirety of class time, with students not permitted to use the desk or chair of another student.
Students must be seated at least one meter apart, while the teacher must remain at a distance of at least two metres from the students. The same rule applies for middle schools.
