Cypriot teens top Europe in vaping

E-cigarette use surges among youth and adults as traditional smoking declines

Newsroom

According to a report by Hector Georgiou, a recent ESPAD survey showed that Cypriot teenagers are among the top users of e-cigarettes in Europe. Around 4.6% of 15-16-year-olds reported daily e-cigarette use—well above the European average of 3.1%. While traditional smoking is on the decline, the popularity of vaping is steadily growing. Only 14% of teens smoked conventional cigarettes in the past month, a sharp drop from 23% in 2011.

E-cigarettes aren’t just popular with teens—adults in Cyprus are also jumping on the trend. A survey by the Cyprus Anti-Substance Authority found that 57% of adult smokers had tried e-cigarettes in 2023, up from just 21% in 2019. Most cited quitting regular cigarettes as their main motivation, with the 25-44 age group leading the charge.

Health Minister Michalis Damianou recently clarified the ingredients in e-cigarette liquids, which include nicotine, propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, flavorings, and water. EU regulations cap nicotine content at 20 mg/ml and limit disposable e-cigarettes to 2 ml.

The government is keeping a close eye on the e-cigarette market, conducting inspections to enforce labeling and marketing laws. Officials ensure products comply with rules on packaging, nicotine limits, and the ban on certain stimulants like caffeine and taurine in e-liquids.

With vaping on the rise, both among teens and adults, authorities are stepping up efforts to manage its impact and ensure compliance with EU regulations.
