Diplomatic handshake sets the stage for new alliances

A Joint Communiqué on the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Cyprus and the Republic of Benin was signed by the Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the UN, Ambassador Andreas Hadjichrysanthou and the Permanent Representative of Benin, Ambassador Marc Hermanne Araba.

In a joint letter, the two Ambassadors informed the UN Secretary General and requested that the Joint Communiqué be circulated as an official document to all Members of the Organization.

The Joint Communiqué states that the two governments have decided to establish diplomatic relations guided by the principles and purposes of the United Nations Charter and International Law, particularly with respect to the promotion of international peace and security, equality between states, of national sovereignty, independence, international treaties, territorial integrity and non-interference in the internal affairs of states.

Diplomatic relations between Cyprus and Benin were established in accordance with the provisions of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961 and came into force on the date of signing the Joint Communique.
