In observance of World Hypertension Day, health leaders in Cyprus have launched a nationwide campaign urging the public to take blood pressure seriously, literally.
Under the slogan “Measure your blood pressure accurately – Control it – Live longer,” the Cyprus Society of Cardiology and the Cyprus Society of Internal Medicine, backed by the Cyprus Medical Association and pharmaceutical firm Medochemie, rolled out a public awareness initiative Thursday spotlighting the risks of untreated high blood pressure.
Hypertension, dubbed the “silent killer” for its asymptomatic yet deadly nature, affects nearly 30% of Cypriot adults, with rates surging to two-thirds among those over 60. Despite its prevalence, many remain unaware they are at risk.
The campaign’s goal: break the silence surrounding high blood pressure through education, routine screenings, and lifestyle changes. Globally, an estimated 25% of adults live with hypertension, a condition tied to poor diet, lack of exercise, stress, and smoking.
Organizers emphasized that a simple blood pressure check could prevent life-threatening complications affecting the heart, brain, and arteries. The campaign includes public events, expert consultations, educational materials, and multimedia content, all designed to drive home one urgent message: early detection saves lives.
“Because a single measurement can save your life,” campaign materials remind.
