Cyprus will continue to invest in strengthening its defense and upgrading its military capabilities, Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas said Wednesday, after a parade marking the island nation’s Independence Day.

Speaking in Nicosia, Palmas said the government remains committed to modernizing the armed forces so they can meet “multi-layered” security challenges and serve as both a stabilizing force and a trusted partner in the region.

He described Oct. 1, the anniversary of Cyprus’ independence from British colonial rule in 1960, as a landmark date in the country’s modern history, honoring the struggles and sacrifices of past generations. The day, he said, serves both as a reminder of the fight for freedom and as a call to draw strength for the future.

Palmas praised the National Guard as the guarantor of the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He also paid tribute to those who lost their lives in defense of Cyprus, as well as those currently serving to safeguard the nation.

The minister congratulated participants in the parade and thanked visiting Greek Deputy Defense Minister Thanasis Davakis, saying his presence underscored the “enduring and unbreakable ties” between Cyprus and Greece.
