Cyprus police probe after high school students post Nazi images online

Authorities scramble to identify students promoting hate as Education Ministry steps in

Newsroom

Authorities are moving swiftly after photos circulated online showing a group of Larnaca high school students giving Nazi salutes, drawing swastikas, and sharing extremist ideology.

While the Education Ministry and the school are handling the matter internally, the cybercrime unit has launched its own investigation to trace the social media account that posted the content. Identifying the students is proving tricky, as some faces were obscured in the images.

School officials are reportedly preparing disciplinary measures for those involved. The principal is expected to impose penalties aimed at addressing both the actions and the wider influence these students may have tried to exert on classmates.

The Education Ministry, alerted to the incident days ago, instructed the school to investigate immediately. Follow-up discussions between ministry officials and the school are scheduled to ensure accountability.

The case has raised serious concerns because the students appear to have attempted to recruit peers to their ideology. Legal experts note that under Cypriot law, publicly promoting racist ideas or inciting violence can be a criminal offense, opening the possibility of formal police complaints.

Authorities say the priority is twofold: to hold the students accountable and to prevent the spread of hate in schools, sending a clear message that extremist behavior will not be tolerated.
