Authorities in Cyprus are moving ahead with plans to launch a nationwide emergency alert system designed to quickly inform the public during crises, with officials saying the platform is expected to be ready by early June.

The system aims to provide fast and reliable information to residents during emergencies, helping authorities communicate instructions and safety measures when situations escalate.

Speaking after a meeting with Nikolas Papadopoulos, Civil Defense administrator Panayiota Papa said the country is currently at a good level of preparedness, although she acknowledged there are still areas that need improvement.

“We are at a very good level of preparedness,” she said, adding that authorities are aware of certain weaknesses and are working to address them.

Preparing without causing panic

Papa said Cyprus Civil Defence is focusing on preparation and prevention while trying to keep the public informed without creating unnecessary alarm.

“There are several challenges we must deal with,” she said, stressing that the goal is to ensure the population is ready to respond to any potential emergency.

Authorities are working with various government agencies and partners to strengthen the system and improve coordination.

Public urged to stay informed

Papa also urged citizens to pay attention to official announcements and guidance from authorities, saying that informed residents are better able to react during emergencies.

“When people are properly informed, they are more resilient and can deal with risks more effectively,” she said.

Testing underway

The government has already begun testing parts of the alert system in recent days. The trial effort was organized by the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy in cooperation with mobile phone providers.

Papa said the tests revealed some technical issues, but feedback is now being reviewed so improvements can be made before the system is fully launched.

Additional tests are expected to take place in the coming days as authorities fine-tune the platform.

Once completed, the system will allow the government to send rapid alerts and instructions to the public during emergencies, giving residents timely information that could help protect lives.
