Authorities in Cyprus will conduct a nationwide test of a new emergency mobile alert system on Wednesday evening, as officials urge the public to remain calm and prepared amid heightened tensions in the region.

Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou announced that a test message will be sent at 7:00 p.m. to all mobile phone users across the country. The initiative is part of a new government system designed to deliver rapid warnings and instructions to residents if a potential security incident occurs.

The alert service has been developed in cooperation with telecommunications providers operating in Cyprus. Its purpose is to ensure that citizens receive timely and reliable information during emergencies so they can take appropriate safety measures.

Three types of emergency messages

If a real emergency arises, the system will use a series of standardized alerts.

The first message would notify citizens that, due to an unstable situation in the region, they should remain vigilant and prepare to follow civil protection guidance.

A second alert would inform the public that authorities are investigating a possible security incident. During this stage, residents would be asked to stay calm and follow instructions from Civil Defence while awaiting further updates.

The third message would be issued once the situation has been resolved, confirming that the security incident has ended.

Safety instructions for the public

Officials also outlined recommended actions for residents who receive an emergency alert.

People are advised to move calmly to a basement shelter if one is available in their home, a nearby building, or their current location. If no basement is accessible, they should stay inside the building and keep away from doors, windows, and glass surfaces.

Anyone outdoors at the time of an alert should immediately seek the nearest indoor space.

In facilities such as schools, hospitals, and sports venues, trained staff will activate established emergency procedures. Authorities emphasized that citizens should avoid traveling to these locations by vehicle during an incident.

Until additional guidance is issued by the authorities, residents are advised to remain indoors or in basement areas and avoid moving around outside, whether on foot or by car.

Purpose of the system

The government says the alert system is intended to strengthen public safety and preparedness. By sending direct notifications to mobile phones, officials hope to ensure that the population receives clear instructions quickly if a potential threat is being assessed.

The test message scheduled for this evening will allow authorities to verify that the system functions properly across all mobile networks in Cyprus.
